For over fifty years, the Department of
Economics at the ITAM has been recognized as one of the most
dynamic intellectual centers in the country. Due to the intense
participation of our faculty and alumni in
research and government, we are also one of the most influential
bodies in economic thought and policy design.
Our international
faculty of more than thirty full time professors and researchers
is dedicated to teaching and research activities, allowing us
to reach the levels of excellence and leadership that identify
the institution today. Our teaching capacity is complemented
by more than forty part time professors who are economists working
in the public and private sector, many in positions of great
responsibility. Due to the practical experience and guidance
they provide, they play a key role in the students professional
development during the initial phase of their careers.
Our scientific production is published primarily in specialized
international journals and has confirmed the Department´s position
as the leader in its field within Latin America and one of the
top 50 departments of economics worldwide. We channel our research
activities through two centers: the
Center for Economic Research and the Center for Applied
Economics and Public Policy. The first is dedicated to developing
academic research and maintaining a link between the Center
and the international scientific community. The second focuses
on issues applied to the Mexican economy and works primarily
with other local research centers and government bodies.
The Department offers a full complement of academic programs:
the
B.A. in Economics, the
Masters in Economics, the
Masters in Public Policy, the
Masters in Economic Theory and the
Ph.D. in Economics. The undergraduate program in Economics
is the largest and best known of the ITAM programs with an annual
registration of 200 students. Their talent and academic achievement
is often recognized by external organizations and for more than
thirty years, our students have been awarded national prizes
for their thesis work. The number of economics students who
are accepted into postgraduate study programs abroad is greater
than the total of all the other academic institutions in the
country.
Finally, the ITAM Ph.D. in Economics and the Masters Economic
Theory are programs that are exclusively dedicated to the development
of research skills. The Ph.D. forms part of the Latin American
Doctoral Program, a joint effort between the Universidad de
Chile, the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Argentina and the
ITAM. The Masters in Economics and the Masters in Public Policy
combine elements of formal research with the development of
practical skills for their application in the professional environment.
